I do think Trump does bear some responsibility: he seemed not to know what was in the bill, yet he pushed the bill in a very half-assed way. He said that he wanted the bill passed; but he never got involved in lobbying for the bill until the very end and then only to threaten the freedom caucus. He said this was his premier issue and yet did almost nothing to ensure it got done. I think a big part of its failure is his fault.

Every time I hear your opening, I wonder at the idea of breaking news. Is any news, breaking news? or is that a tagline or an aspiration? My mother watched every moment of the OJ chase and trial, every moment of the hanging chad re-count, and the all day coverage of cameras scanning the same spot on the water for Kennedy. She consumed ‘breaking news’ and forced us to watch it too. She actually called me out of a college class to tell me the verdict of the OJ trial. Very little of the reporting for any of those events was urgent, sudden, or breaking, though I expect they sold some sleep number beds. All of them had a false sense of urgency and degree of you must know these things to be a good citizen. How much of this is warping the ability to sieve the actual meanings of the events covered from the emotional appeal to sadness – that empty sweep of ocean – and civic responsibility, real or perceived?
